Compulsory Basic Training (CBT)

Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) must be taken before you can ride on the road, unless you are on the road riding element of an approved CBT course. Once you have successfully completed CBT and have the certificate of completion for an approved training course (DL196), you can carry on and take additional training to pass your test and qualify for a full motorcycle or moped licence.Provisional Moped Entitlement allows you to ride a machine which has an engine under 50cc.
A CBT certificate is valid for 2 years from the date of issue.
To ride a moped on the public roads you must:-
- Be at least 16 years of age.
- Have a driving licence that entitles you to ride a moped (Category P.) Car drivers, on passing their practical test, are given category P entitlement on their licence with effect from 1st February, 2001 but a newly qualified driver will need to complete CBT before this entitlement is validated. This once-only CBT is valid for a moped until the expiry of their licence.
